Some of you may be aware that myself and photographer Dave Best have been working on a book for a couple of years now. Well, after more false starts than I care to think of, the book is on it's way. Unless the ship sinks, it should be available in just a few weeks.

You can read more about it here:

And you can pre order your copy here:

Thanks,

Nigel

Is this available in the USA?

Oh yes, if you order through the YPD link, then put in a USA address it comes up with the figure of £4.95 for postage which seems pretty reasonable to me. So the total would be £22.95.

This guy was last here nearly 3 years ago under a slightly different username, got in a brawl and left in a huff.
Now he's back selling a book

Well, that's one way of putting it, yes. But don't let that put you off buying a copy, or at least borrowing a copy to read. You may enjoy it, or find it quite inspiring. I've made quite a few instruments in my time so I thought it would be good to share some of what I have learned.

Nigel,
Have enjoyed your you-tube videos.
I have a question. If you are not telling, what are you telling in your book. What kind of book is it ?

NF - The short answer is - I’m not telling! It is common for makers, amateurs in particular to share what they know or at least what they think they know, but this can lead to lots of people making similar guitars. The reason why people want my work and are prepared to pay the price I ask is that my work is not like that of most other makers.

Is that quote from an old interview? Fair question.

What I don't discuss is dimensions, thicknessing, strutting patterns and alike. It is not my intention to spoon feed the reader every bit of information about how to build a Forster guitar. And as dimensions vary a little from instrument to instrument they would be of little use. What I do write about is my approach, how I think about things. My views on dimensions change often too, so it may be of more use to the reader to try and understand the thinking behind the numbers.

This book contains many photographs, I know that in the past I've gained a great deal from going over images over and over again, and had ideas as a result that may not have been the intention of the photographer but that were non the less valid. There are some images and partial images of soundboard patterns.

There is also a series of essays where I give my views on a range of subjects, such as playability, sound, beauty, longevity, selecting timber, design, construction and handwork/machine work. By explaining what I think and feel about these subjects my hope is readers will gain their own personal insights by looking at things from a different point of view.

NK
Ive learned alot of things in my many years of computing - so Ill share so you can benefit from my wisdom.
Is this going to be available as a ebook? If so do yourself a favor and dont! Its just a matter of time before all books that are desirable end up scanned and on the filesharing sites (negating many many sales)... if they are released as an ebook they end up on the filesharing sites the next day!(mabye the same day)
Cheers
